Even though the Channel Tunnel was opened some time ago the town of Dover in Kent is still one England’s major ferry ports. Most of the ferries make their way across to France, although other destinations are served as well. Plus over the centuries it has been a very strategic position and helped to protect England from invading hordes.

Because it is a ferry port, a lot of people will just drive into Dover and out again. But the town has lots of places to stay which means you can stay here in order to explore the surrounding Kent countryside.
